Italy in the Lebanon

Italy is participating in the United Nations Resolution and is sending a military presence for the buffer zone force. The United Nations intervention, even though it’s late, is fundamental to bringing back peace to the Lebanon after a war that has caused the almost complete destruction of the country.
Thousands of dead among the civilians, mostly Lebanese and hundreds among the Israeli and Hezbollah soldiers have made the Middle East even more unstable and dangerous than it was before hostilities began.
In these last few weeks, the Italian Government has operated in favour of peace. It has done this by organising the summit in Rome that was the precursor to the United Nations agreement. It has also held meetings with the parties concerned.
Our presence in the Lebanon will protect not only Lebanese and Israeli civilians, but more generally it will look after peace in the Mediterranean, which is a priority area for Italy. For whom does the bell toll in the Lebanon? It’s ringing for all those who have peace in their hearts. Italy will do its part.

Dr Di Pietro
How much does all this cost? Are Italian soldiers paid a lot for each day they serve in Iraq, in Afghanistan and soon in the Lebanon? Does this money come from the Italian tax payer, from the United Nations, from the arms manufacturers?

When they come back alive from serving in these countries what percentage of the soldiers are suffering from physical and mental health problems? Are they given adequate health care? Who pays for that?

Is a peace-keeping force the only solution? Are there other solutions that are alternatives or that can run in parallel?

Has anyone asked peace academics or peace activists what they think?

What can normal people do to help the people of the Middle East?

Many thanks

Elizabeth

The Italian "center-left" government was elected in April by a majority of Italian voters who demanded and expected the new government to withdraw the armed forces from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Instead of withdrawing the troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, the new government is sending the military to Lebanon to serve the interests of Israel and the USA.

The government call it a "peace mission", but of course "peace mission" is an Orwellian definition that, translated into Italian, means "war mission".

The new Italian government are taking their voters for a huge ride and I despise such government.

I am for peacem and nothing wrong sending our troups to help, but I feel is like putting a bandaid,in a wound that need surgery, the situation in Palestine as been going for too long, and for too long the intenational community hasen,t done nothing really concrete about it,I like to see a long lasting peace, beetwen all party involve, and resolve the situation once for all.
