Yesterday at Palazzo Chigi I met representatives of the Regions and I presented to the press the document of infrastructure priorities.
The infrastructure priorities are set out to develop the country through a process of programming with the Regions and the local and territorial bodies.
The improvement of infrastructure and above all the great axes of connections (pan-European and national corridors) is a necessary condition to avoid the marginalisation of our country in the European Community.
The secondary networks and their connection to the principal networks will be strengthened to give a more equal access on a territorial level to intercontinental traffic. The politics of development must be distinguished between the North and the South of Italy.
The development in the North needs to tackle and resolve the problems of congestion.
The South can legitimately hope for a strategic role as a European gateway for traffic coming from the Far East and the Middle East and from North Africa. For this reason, it is necessary to identify access points in terms of ports, airports and networks that connect to the whole of the continent.
It’s necessary to intervene with big engineering projects, but also with infrastructures that are functional to the residents. It’s also necessary to ensure the functioning and the production capacity to avoid that the country isn’t simply transformed into a passageway for goods on their way to Europe.
