Protecting the strong and the crafty

I’m publishing the video and the transcript of Italia dei Valori’s voting intentions on the legislative decree for economic development.

Antonio Di Pietro: Signor President of the Council who is not present, come on, have a bit of respect for Parliament. Present yourself at least on the day that you are asking for a vote of confidence! But anyway we have understood. You don’t care about Parliament. Anyway you know that the majority of the people who are here, at least as long as we have this electoral law, will always be ready to vote for any pig-like-thing, just to humour you and thus to gain a place at table for the next time. (Comments). Ah yes, I know, I know, it hurts to hear these words, but unfortunately this is the real truth, especially after the approval of the law with which your majority has given you the gift of impunity. (Comments form the deputies of the Lega Nord Padania). An impunity that is temporary, Signor President of the Council who is not present, keep this well in mind, because the referendum that we are preparing will sweep away this all-Italian-shame that you have obliged us to suffer.

Today Signor President of the Council who is not present, put your personal affairs in order, you are proposing to us another legislative decree, this too home-made, in secret, all on your own, as though to make laws it is just you and always you to do it, as though Parliament had no purpose, as though the Constitution has no purpose, and you present it to us with this measure that is pompously called “Urgent measures for the economic development, the simplification, the competitiveness, the stabilization of public finances and tax equality.” Oh goodness, I said to myself when I read the title, let’s see! And I set to to read the documents.

An impossible task. We found ourselves faced with 600 pages of articles, references to other articles, cross-references, footnotes, a text that you can’t even understand where you have to start reading! But then we understood: we aren’t meant to read it.

And in fact, not even your ministers have read it, because it was approved in a Council of Ministers lasting only 9 minutes! So basically it’s all fictitious, and in fact in the few days after that you crammed it full of amendments, amendments, amendments: one you have presented right now in this instant!

Then, today you are asking for a vote of confidence, a vote of confidence that we of Italia dei Valori, that don’t have the words “joker” written on our foreheads, have no intention of giving you.

But let’s turn to the substance of this economic manoevre about which we have listened with attention, I repeat, with attention the «review» carried out by the Minister of the Economy, Tremonti the other day in this Chamber. Without a doubt, Tremonti gave us an interesting lesson in economic policy and he even supplied us - in my opinion – with important points for reflection on a cultural level.

I too am becoming convinced that the modern liberal economy, if left just to the free globalisation of markets, risks being transformed in reality into an anarchic collection of monopolies, oligopolies, cartels of companies, intricate conflicts of interests, basically it’s true that there’s the need for a return to giving public ownership greater responsibility, as otherwise the ones to gain are always the massive companies, and not the common good.
